In the post-war 1940s, Carol Reed made a set of films that should be the envy of any filmmaker (in fact it’s slightly mindblowing that they were released in consecutive years – how many runs like that are there?) – Odd Man Out (1947), The Fallen Idol (1948), and The Third Man (1949).

Sandwiched between two acknowledged classics, The Fallen Idol has perhaps not had as much attention but it contains many of the elements that characterised Reed’s filmmaking. It has been restored and re-issued on DVD/Blu-Ray in the UK today and I’ve reviewed it for Eye for Film – here.
